Proposed budget cuts to impact local correctional facilities

POSTED: October 21, 2009

Fifty-one positions at the Fort Dodge Correctional Facility are expected to be eliminated due to state-wide budget cuts. Twenty-seven positions at the facility were already vacant and will not be filled, according to public relations officials at the Iowa Department of Corrections.

At the North Central Correctional Facility in Rockwell City, 19 staff positions will most likely be cut including nine that are currently filled.

Personnel will be cut from across the board - ranging from security to treatment and administration personnel.

The cuts come after an order from Gov. Chet Culver to cut the state's budget by 10 percent.

State departments submitted their proposals to Culver and departmental plans are to be finalized by Oct. 28.

it is hard to understand what our man Chet was thinking when he made this rash decision- and even harder to understand the positions the prison warden sent in to be considered for cuts- but these people continue to sleep at night, while the actual guards try to do their jobs with less staff , trying to keep the "authority figures" homes safe for them to sleep in- irony!

I agree with all above comments... The Facilities, or should I say (bad boys place) should not be cut, that for sure is going to leave more problems inside the prison.. Not good, lets go back lil ways, wat about the escape of the two inmates in Fort Madison facility, happend because ther was not enough officers, and over worked...... We are in for some problems with all of the 777 position's across the state, not only FD....

ksl-the FILLED positions being cut total 51, in addition to the 27 already vacant for a total of 78. Security staff was already feeling the pinch of not enough officers, now it will be much worse than anyone could have imagined. I don't see how Chet thinks all of these cuts will help when the whole problem is revenues being down due to UNEMPLOYMENT and a poor economy. So let's put another 1000 taxpayers out of work? It makes no sense. This is people's lives you're messing with. Bravo SDVB, you nailed it! It's usually the little guy that gets stepped on by the BIG people above.

You got it right SVDB01! The staff doing the hands on work with offenders are the majority of who's getting laid off. Security in the prison & in the community will surely be jeopardized. Plus, offenders will not receive any treatment and will return to the community with no services. This will result in more crime and a return to prison. What a great plan!

The meat cleaver approach indicates a total lack of leadership. By now Culver should know enough about state activities and programs that he could make specific cuts in personnel and programs of marginal utility.

You can discuss the possibilities of who should be cut and who shouldn't, but the bigger picture is that the medium/maximum prison will still have the same number of inmates with less staff to supervise them. Who is at risk? The city of fort dodge, and the all the staff who now have to do the same job with less staff and less security. Oh and they can kiss vacations and time off good-by!

SDVB01, cuts are never good, but from what I can read from the article above, it sounds like only 24 filled positions will be lost. The other 27 vacant positions will be eliminated. I would agree that some of the managers should be eliminated.

78 positions is nearly a quarter of the staff. Hope Ft. Dodge and surrounding community feels safe under the leadership of Chet and the incompetent Warden. Most of the eliminated positions are the ones getting the job done, only a couple we're middle management, of course we won't touch the high dollar upper management positions. God knows the pointless Deputy Warden and 5 Unit Managers (again unneeded) will be spared. Their salary's alone would allow for around 10 Officers to remain.
