EUGENE J. HARTY

Eugene J. Harty, 81 of Fort Dodge, died Sunday October 11, 2009 at Trinity Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October, 14th, at 10:30 a.m. in the Chapel of the Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home with Sister Gertrude O'Keefe R.S.M. and Pastor Sara Hill co-officiating. Following the services cremation will take place. Inurnment will take place at a later date in the Chapel of Peace Mausoleum, at North Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Gene is survived by his wife of 59 years Barbara (Nicholls) Harty of Fort Dodge; sons, Steven James Harty and his wife Sue of Waterloo, and their children; Carissa Bacich and Anne Barry both of Des Moines; son, Michael Scott Harty and his wife Jennifer and their children; Abigail and Madison of Alpharetta, Georgia; and his sister, Margaret Mortlock of Vancouver, Washington.

He was preceded in death by his parents James and Ilene Koll Harty.

Gene was born on a farm in Barnum on September 8, 1928. He graduated from Corpus Christi Academy. He then attended Fort Dodge Jr. College. In 1950, he was united in marriage to Barbara Nicholls and the couple established their home in on the family farm. In 1955, Gene went to work for Johnson Clay until it closed in 1'972. He sold cars for Larry Clement until 1974. He then went to work as director of Industrial Sales at Iowa Central Industries retiring in 1990. Gene enjoyed all sports and participated in handball, tennis, and golf. He was a member of the YMCA for over 50 years. He was avid Hawkeye fan and had season tickets for over 20 years. The family enjoyed summer vacations at their Okoboji Cottage. Gene enjoyed playing bridge and belonged to several bridge clubs. He was a good natured Irishman who loved his family and friends.
