ROCHESTER, Minn. - Funeral services for Joseph M. Carey, 91, a resident of Rochester, Minn., will be 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 9, 2009 at Our Lady of Good Counsel, Fonda, Iowa. Visitation will take place Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. at Mahaney Funeral Home, 509 N. King St., Fonda, IA. Burial will take place in the Mt. Zion Cemetery, Fonda. Joe passed away Sunday, Oct. 4, 2009 in Minnesota with his daughter by his side.

Joseph Mark Carey was born on Nov. 14, 1917 in Fonda, Iowa, to William and Susan (Marx) Carey. He earned his BA from the University of Iowa. Joe proudly served our country in the United States Navy. He took part in the invasion on Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944. Joe retired from the United States Navy with the rank of Lieutenant Commander after 30 years of active and reserve service.

After his retirement from the Navy, Joe went to work at the Rock Island Arsenal as an accountant.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mayo Hospice Program.

Joe is survived by his children, Bill (Tamara) Carey, Kentucky, Diana (Charles Huskins, M.D.) Carey, Minnesota, and Nicolette Re, Scottsdale, Ariz.; grandchildren, Estelle, Irina, Maria, and Emily.
