LUVERNE - One person was killed in a single-vehicle accident Saturday.
Dennis Hefty, 61, was the passenger in a Dodge Ram 2500 truck traveling northbound on Kossuth County Road P60 at about 3:50 a.m., when the vehicle dropped off the east shoulder, according to information from the Kossuth County Sheriff's Office.
Hefty's wife, Susan Hefty, 54, was driving when she attempted to correct the action and the vehicle traveled across the roadway, entering the west ditch, the report stated. The truck rolled and Dennis Hefty was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
She was wearing a seat belt and the Algona Fire Department used extraction equipment to get her out of the car. She was transported to the Kossuth Regional Medical by ambulance where she was later released.
Sandy Christiansen, a family friend, spoke fondly of "Denny" Hefty.
"He's just a solid guy," said Christiansen, who worked with the couple at Ernie Williams John Deere Co., in Algona. "He was very dependable and very conscientious."
Dennis Hefty farmed the family farm near Renwick, which Christiansen said was his passion. He has five children and three grandchildren.
"He was totally committed to his family - they were his world," she said.
Funeral services for Hefty are at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Algona. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Algona and before the service.
"He was just one of those guys who was a good guy," Christiansen said. "Somebody that people could trust. He will be greatly missed."
