MARIE (KIRBY) HARROLD
MANSON - Marie (Kirby) Harrold, 94, of Manson, IA, passed away Sept. 10, 2009. A funeral wake service will take place on Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009, from 3-7p.m. at the Larson-Weishaar Funeral Home in Manson. A rosary will be prayed at 4 p.m. and prayer service at 5 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday,. Sept. 14, 2009, at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Manson at 10:30 a.m. with Fr. Richard Ries officiating. There will be visitation at the church starting one hour prior to the funeral Mass with interment in the St. Thomas Cemetery in Manson following.
Marie Catherine Kirby was born March 10, 1915, and raised on a farm just southwest of Gilmore City, IA, to Edward and Margaret (Miller) Kirby. Marie attended country school through 8th grade, attended Gilmore City Catholic High School and graduated from Pocahontas High School in 1933. Marie married Donald Harrold on Jan. 31, 1938, and they made their home on a farm just northwest of Palmer, Iowa, for the next 41 years. While farming, Marie and Donald raised five children: Karen, Stephen, Dennis, Douglas, and Kent. Marie enjoyed gardening, dancing, playing cards, and traveling. She also enjoyed her family and various family gatherings and milestone events. Marie was and active member in her church and was a member of Catholic Daughters of America for more than 50 years, first joining at Fonda, and later attending at Pocahontas and Fort Dodge. She and Donald resided in Manson since retiring in 1978. Marie established scholarship opportunities at Briar Cliff University and Iowa State Catholic Student Center.
Marie is survived by her sons Dennis Harrold of Fort Dodge; Douglas Harrold of Sioux City, IA; and Kent Harrold of Columbus, OH; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She is also survived by brothers Frank Kirby of Humboldt, IA; Ivan Kirby of Emmetsburg; and sister Inez Fox of Chicago, IL; sisters-in-law Vivian Kirby of Humboldt; and Coleen Murman and Delores Harrold both of Palmer as well as many nieces and nephews and friends. Those preceding her in death include her parents; her husband Donald Harrold; son Stephen Harrold; daughter Karen Simpson; brothers George and Donald Kirby and sisters Ella Tripp and Martha Doohen.
