ROCKWELL CITY - Donita J. Casey, 69, formerly of Jolley, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at the Stewart Memorial Hospital in Lake City. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 31, at the Church of Christ, Rockwell City, with Rev. Dwaine Simonsen officiating. Burial will be at Crown Hill Cemetery, Jolley. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 30, at the Palmer & Swank Funeral Home, Rockwell City.
Donita is survived by her husband Gary; children, Jewell Casey of Pocahontas, Richard Casey and his friend David McMichael of Des Moines, Deborah Casey Sanders of Oklahoma City, OK, and Joleen Graham and her husband Anthony of Jolley; 11 grandchildren; sister Janet Hamre and her husband Phil of Moorhead, MN; and soon to be a great-grandmother later this year. She was preceded in death by her son Randy James Casey in infancy; parents, Melvin and Eva Smith; and her grandparents, Vera and Bert Smith, who raised her in her teenage years.
Donita Jean Smith Casey was born Feb. 5, 1940 at Lake City. She graduated from Rockwell City High School, with the Class of 1958. On Feb. 25, 1959 she was united in marriage to Gary Casey. The couple established their home on the family farmstead west of Jolley. Donita worked as a certified nursing assistant for care centers in the area for many years. In 2006, Gary and Donita moved into Rockwell City. Donita was an active member of the New Life Fellowship Church in Pomeroy from the early 1980's to the 1990's; and was active in the Republican Party.
