Western music legend Michael Martin Murphey will take center stage Saturday night at the Fort Museum Opera House, but locals will get their first chance to see him Saturday morning in the annual Frontier Days parade.

Murphey - a Western Music Association Hall of Fame inductee with six gold albums - will be driven down Central Avenue in a heavy, wooden-wheeled wagon drawn by a two-horse Belgian hitch. Accompanying Murphey and the wagon will be members of another Frontier Days act, the Hole in the Sock Gang, portraying " Murphey's Marauders."

The Belgians are owned by Glen Determann, of Wall Lake, and the wagon will be driven by his daughter, Nancy Jenssen and her husband, Ted. The Determann family travels around Iowa with their draft horses - often featuring an eight-horse hitch - and will pull a $250,000 wagon for the Great Circus Parade in Milwaukee, Wis., on July 12.

"We're thrilled to be invited to come to Frontier Days. We're very happy to come to Fort Dodge," said Nancy Jenssen, whose family members have been entertaining at parades for 25 years and are regulars at the Clay County Fair in Spencer.

Jenssen said she and her husband are also thrilled to get to spend time in the wagon with Murphey. He will perform the Lone Cowboy Campfire Concert at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Fort Museum. A $5 Frontier Days button that allows admission to all events Friday and Saturday also includes Murphey's concert.

More than 150 entries will make their way down Central Avenue for this year's 10 a.m. parade, including the Fort Dodge Marching Band, Decker Truck Line Inc.'s Cyclone semi, a vintage fire truck provided by Tom Donney and the Gypsum Gypsies Book Club.

One new addition to the parade will be a cotton candy vendor who will stroll along Central Avenue selling his wares.

Frontier Days buttons will be available for sale along both sides of the street during the parade. The buttons, sold throughout the community through today, can be purchased Friday and Saturday at the Fort Museum gates, Hy-Vee, Fareway and Daniel Pharmacy .

Athletics for Education and Success will provide a preview of Frontier Days entertainment at 6 p.m. today with a spaghetti dinner at the Fort Museum Opera House. The $7-per-plate fundraiser will feature comic stunt juggler Tuey Wilson, a longtime favorite at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival. Wilson will perform at 8:45 p.m. Friday at the Fort and three times on Saturday.

The AFES dinner includes spaghetti with meat sauce, tossed salad, bread, dessert and a beverage. All proceeds will go toward the Bling Summer Day Camp and After School Program. Both programs are housed at the former Sacred Heart School for students entering kindergarten through eighth grade this fall.

Gates open for Frontier Days at 4 p.m. Friday, with events until midnight. Gates will reopen Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
