Sac City man killed in Sunday wreck

Funeral services are pending

POSTED: April 28, 2009

SAC CITY - A Sac City man was killed in a one-vehicle accident Sunday night.

Joseph Wayne Baker Jr., 57, was westbound on Iowa Highway 175 near Durant Avenue in Calhoun County when he lost control of the Oldsmobile sedan he was driving, went off the road and into the ditch, according to the Iowa State Patrol report.

He was transported by Lake City EMS to Stewart Memorial Hospital in Lake City, where he was pronounced dead, according to Iowa State Patrol Trooper Gerri McCurdy.

McCurdy said Baker was not wearing his seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. He said it appeared the vehicle rolled possibly three times and that speeding may have been a factor. Investigators were awaiting the results of a toxicology test to determine if alcohol was involved.

Baker worked for Hosteng Concrete and Gravel in Sac City. Jan Hosteng and her husband Mark are co-owners of the company and knew Baker well.

"He was a character. He was pretty witty, very, very smart and very good with people," Jan Hosteng said. "He was very talented and could just about do anything."

Hosteng said Baker was originally from Sac City and then moved to Texas for several years. He began working for the Hostengs in 2007. He had two sisters and a brother in the area, she said.

Jan Hosteng spoke nostalgically of Baker as she recalled times they spent together.

"You never knew from one day to another what would happen with him."

Funeral services for Baker are pending at the Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Sac City.
