District piano winners to perform March 8 recital

A recital featuring the winners and alternate winners in the Iowa Music Teachers Association district pre-college piano auditions will be held at 2 p.m. March 8 at Grace Lutheran Church, 211 S. Ninth St.

It is open to the public, and admission is free.

Special recognition also went to students earning a place on the theory honor roll by scoring 90 percent or higher on the written and oral exams. At level A, the theory honor roll included Sebastian Pek with a perfect score of 100 percent, as well as Nadia Fisher, Emily Heupel, Simon Pek, Tyler Doehrmann, Matt Garland, Ben Kolbe and Kara Schroeder.

On the level B theory honor roll were Allison Birks, John Ferrell, Erica Rittgers, Katherine Wood, Emily Zhang, Samuel Pek and Katie Welander. Level C theory honor roll included a perfect score for Maria Towne, as well as Kyle Doehrmann, Jace Neubaum, Caitlin Pace, Allison Bailey, Ayenna Cagaanan and Emma Luhmann.

Earning a place on the level D theory honor roll was Evan Schroeder, and on the level E theory honor roll were Amanda Secor, Tiffany Louk and Adrian Cagaanan. Emma Peterson was named to the level F theory honor roll.

The Fort Dodge district performers were from 10 area music studios - Fort Dodge teachers Jan Altemeier, Marcia Johnson, Shari Lehman, Debbie Neimann and Janine Niemeyer; Marcia Ahlrichs, Rockwell City; Deb Ausborn, Lytton; Linda Benson, Gowrie; Joan Hopkins and Jeannie Vande Zande, Webster City.

More than 65 area piano students participated in the IMTA district pre-college piano auditions on Jan.31 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church. The students were grouped according to age. For each 15 students in any age level, one entrant was advanced to the state audition to be held at Iowa State University on March 14.

Performance requirements include three memorized compositions of contrasting style, plus scales, harmonic cadences and arpeggios.

The students also complete written theory and ear-training exams.
