Area high school seniors are encouraged to apply for five scholarships to be awarded by The Messenger. The one-year, full-tuition scholarships are for graduates entering Iowa Central Community College this fall as first-year, full-time students.
Iowa Central will also provide The Messenger Scholarship recipients with half-tuition scholarships during their second year at Iowa Central. Each scholarship has an approximate value of about $6,000 if the recipient attends Iowa Central both years.
The scholarships are based on high school academic achievement and activities as well as demonstrated leadership, service to community and future plans. Consideration will be given to students who plan to study mass communication, journalism, advertising, marketing, graphics and related majors. Financial need will also be a factor.
At least two scholarships are also earmarked for past and current Messenger carriers. Applicants must graduate in 2009 from high schools in The Messenger's 11-county market area. Those counties include Buena Vista, Calhoun, Greene, Hamilton, Humboldt, Kossuth, Palo Alto, Pocahontas, Sac, Webster and Wright.
The deadline to submit a scholarship application is April 1. High school seniors should send their applications to Grant Gibbons, Circulation Director, The Messenger, P.O. Box 659 Fort Dodge, IA 50501. High school transcripts must be included with the application.
Application forms will periodically be in the Messenger, may be requested from Gibbons and will also be available online at www.messengernews.net.
