Aquatic center, engine brakes on tap for council
By BILL SHEA, Messenger staff writerSwimming pools and the noise from compression release engine brakes will be addressed by the Fort Dodge City Council Monday.
The council will begin its work at 6:30 p.m. in the Municipal Building, 819 First Ave. S., with a review of the design work completed so far on the new aquatic center.
That center, consisting of three pools equipped with slides and water toys, will be built near the intersection of 32nd Street and 10th Avenue North. Voters approved a roughly $8 million bond issue to pay for it during a special election in August. Construction is expected to start next spring with a summer 2010 opening planned.
The council will move into a regular business meeting at 7 p.m. in the Municipal Building.
Council members will consider the second reading of a law banning the use of compression release engine brakes by big trucks in the city. Violating the proposed law would result in a fine of $100 or less.
The measure won preliminary approval on Nov. 10. It must be approved twice more to become law.
Also on Monday, the council will consider two loan agreements. One for $4.3 million would pay for the two new water wells and a new water main.
Another totaling $1.5 million would pay for revamping the intersections of Eighth Street and Fifth Avenue South and Kenyon Road and U.S. Highway 169 as part of the corridor improvement plan.
