Mickelson defeats Ruby

Webster Co. voters keep incumbent in sheriff’s slot

November 5, 2008
By JESSE HELLING, Messenger staff writer

Webster County Sheriff Brian Mickelson fended off challenger Curt Ruby.

Mickelson, a Republican from Vincent, received 10,446 votes, or approximately 58 percent.

Democrat Ruby, of Badger, received 7,513 votes - roughly 42 percent.

Joined by supporters at Webster County Republican headquarters, Mickelson said he plans to keep moving forward with the work he's done since becoming sheriff in 2003.

"I'm glad it's over," he said. "It's been a very stressful time."

The contentious race pitted Mickelson against Ruby, a former deputy with the department who was terminated in December 2007. Though the termination was upheld by the Webster County Civil Service Commission in March, Ruby is currently pursuing legal action against the county.

During the campaign, Mickelson identified several priorities for the department.

He pledged to press on with efforts to combat the illegal drug trade in the county, including cooperation with the Fort Dodge Police Department and the Iowa Highway Patrol.

This will be Mickelson's second four-year term as sheriff.

A telephone call seeking comment from Ruby went unanswered as of press time.

Ruby did issue a written press release, in which he thanked his supporters for their efforts.

"I am proud to see so many fine people demonstrate the moral courage to speak out and stand up for what they believe in," the release said. "From the beginning, we understood that we were up against an entrenched system, yet the campaign team pushed forward and never wavered in their determination. Although we are disappointed with the outcome, we believe the voters have chosen what they think is best for the community. Our hope is that local law enforcement will take this opportunity to reflect, realizing that many citizens are asking for improved services from their law enforcement officials."
