Visibility issue cited in Humboldt wreck that killed teen
Messenger staffHUMBOLDT - The two drivers involved in an August crash that killed a Humboldt girl couldn't see each other in the seconds before their deadly collision, investigators have concluded.
The Iowa State Patrol has also concluded that 16-year-old Brooke Dreyer, who died in the wreck, did stop at a stop sign, but then failed to yield to the other vehicle.
The crash happened at the intersection of Eighth Street North and U.S. Highway 169 in Humboldt on Aug. 16.
Jordan Davis, 15, of Humboldt, was injured in the crash. Davis was a passenger in Dreyer's Pontiac Bonneville. Also injured was Roger Anderson, 20, of Rutland. He was driving the Pontiac Firebird that collided with Dreyer's car.
Dreyer was driving east on Eighth Street North; Anderson was southbound on U.S. Highway 169.
In a summary of the final accident report released Tuesday, Trooper Neil Morenz wrote that ''neither driver had a direct line of sight view of one another.''
He reported that Dreyer stopped at the stop sign, but couldn't see Anderson's car because of another southbound vehicle. He wrote that Dreyer pulled away from the stop sign and safely crossed one lane of the highway before her vehicle was hit broadside by Anderson's car.
