Two dead in accident

POSTED: September 26, 2008

HAMILTON COUNTY - Two people were killed and two others injured in an accident on Interstate 35 Thursday.

Jeffrey Hiatt, 48, of Huxley, and Brian Stoneburner, 19, of Woodward, died after a semitrailer ran through a construction zone, according to an accident report from the Iowa State Patrol.

The semi, driven by James Michon, 35, of Warren, was southbound and ran into another vehicle that was stationary on the right side of the road.

The vehicle was stopped in front of two more stationary vehicles and displayed a traffic device advising traffic to move to the left lane because of construction ahead.

This caused a chain reaction. The vehicle displaying the traffic device then rear-ended the vehicle behind it and that vehicle rear- ended the one behind it.

Michon was injured and taken to Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames by Jewell Ambulance. Lee Holland, 20, of Kelly, was also injured in the accident and transported to Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames by Story City Ambulance.

Hiatt was pronounced dead at the scene but Stoneburner was air lifted to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines where he later died of his injuries.

Hiatt, Stoneburner and Holland were all working for the construction company.

I saw this yesterday coming home from Des Moines, it stopped the southbound traffic on the Interstate. I had passed these crews earlier in the day working on the shoulders of the highway. Plenty of lights flashing, and warning signs to alert drivers of the crew.

People, we must slow down and pay attention to the road signs and signals, especially in work zones. This tragic event could have been avoided if only the truck driver had slowed, and paid attention.

My prayers go out to the families of the victims.
