Rep. Miller awaits Clinton-Obama compromise in Denver
By BILL SHEA, Messenger staff writerState Rep. Helen Miller is hoping for a deal that will conclude Hillary Clinton's historic bid for the White House without damaging Democratic support for Barack Obama.
Whatever pact the two reach about a roll call vote will be introduced to Miller, D-Fort Dodge, and thousands of other delegates at the Democratic National Convention in Denver. She endorsed Obama before the January Iowa caucuses.
''Hillary has fought the good fight and now it's time for her to do what any man before her did and step out of the way,'' Miller said Tuesday afternoon.
''Her followers they almost expect her to get a special pass that no man ever received,'' she added. ''I don't get this.''
Before stepping into Denver's Pepsi Center, Miller expressed hope that the Clinton and Obama camps would reach an agreement as early as Tuesday night.
Clinton, she said, ''made history.''
''You can't take that away from her,'' she said.
Miller said U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy and Michelle Obama brought tears to the eyes of many fellow delegates when they addressed the convention Monday night.
''There was a very, very special feeling in the air,'' she said.
Miller noticed fewer protesters in Denver Tuesday.
Tickets to Obama's Thursday evening speech at Invesco Field at Mile High have become a hot commodity in the convention city. Miller guessed that people could make a nice profit selling their tickets.
Iowa Gov. Chet Culver, who spoke to the delegates from the Hawkeye State early Tuesday, opened the convention proceedings Tuesday afternoon.
