Aquatic center passes
Late vote count changes outcomeBy BILL SHEA, Messenger staff writer
In a surprising turn of events, an additional vote count late Tuesday night showed the Fort Dodge aquatic center was actually approved.
The final unofficial tally showed that the bond issue passed by a margin of 61.15 percent.
Webster County Auditor Carol Messerly said vote totals released earlier Tuesday night did not include absentee ballots. The absentee ballots pushed the project over the needed 60 percent super majority.
There were 3,962 yes votes and 2,517 no votes.

If you think we can afford to add Phase II and Phase III, we can always add indoor facility. For another $20M, we could become a winter destination. Let rejoice over our three month facility and take another look. Maybe another 10 dollars a month for median priced home is do-able. Dream large.

Perhaps the hot dogs and buns left over from this evening's rescheduled WWP post AC vote celebration could be frozen and saved for Rich Higg's next unsuccessful City Council campaign. Ward 3 voted en masse so his "I'm not here to entertain your kids" platform should resonate!

An indoor/outdoor facility like King's Pointe in Storm Lake would have been fantastic. But we have to get real here. Those types of structures, especially if attached to a hotel, cost probably triple what this project will cost. And they are most likely backed by major investors and hotel chains, not built by the city alone. I don't think the plan is what was making people vote no. Whatever - I'm glad it's over, and I am ridiculously happy for Fort Dodge families right now.

There are plenty of other things on the docket from both the public and private sectors and the aquatic center vote gets us momentum to move in the right direction. We cannot just sit on our laurels, we have to continue. I don't know for sure, but if we get the 1/2 cent sales tax passed we will not have to worry about assessments and we will have two more important items to add to the list when we go recruiting new business and more people.

I am so happy about the Yes vote, and I am not going to press my luck, but I can see where "the conservative" is coming from, An indoor facility would be a nice addition. I'm just glad we got this passed..now when do we break ground?

I understand both sides...but my family plans to leave the area in the coming years if investments like this don't continue to make Fort Dodge more family friendly. No sense in driving 90+ miles on the weekends to find things to do when we can move and have diverse entertainment and culture in another location. You have to give something to get something in return. I live very close to the location in question, and I welcome the opportunity to invest in my own community while enjoying some fun and promoting the physical health of my family.

Like I said, many times on this post, I wanted a new pool. Just was not, and I am still not sure this is the best plan for the pool, but we will see. I would still like to see it be a year round facility. I mean come on, if there was nothing for the kids to do now, what do they do for the 9 months the pool is closed? Anyway, now we can turn our attention to getting Paxton fired. That way we truly get Fort Dodge on a new path!

Kelly, yes if it had been no we could have a another referendum in several months. There are laws about how often you can do a referendum and how much time should be in between elections. Thankfully, we do not have to consider that.
