FD aquatic center vote is today

Polls open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

POSTED: August 26, 2008

The vote on the proposed Fort Dodge aquatic center is today.

City voters will decide if the local government should borrow up to $8.95 million to build the center, which would be located near the intersection of 32nd Street and 10th Avenue North.

The debt would be paid off with property tax revenue. The cost to the owner of an average $70,000 Fort Dodge home would be about $43 annually.

The bond issue must be approved by at least 60 percent of those voting for the project to advance.

The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

A map and list of polling places appears on page 2A of today's edition of The Messenger.

The effort to build a Fort Dodge aquatic center was defeated by city voters by the narrowest of margins Tuesday.

The bond issue needed for the center was approved by 59.77 percent of those voting, but a 60 percent yes vote was needed.

A total of 5,883 of the city's 16,173 voters participated. Webster County Auditor Carol Messerly said the turnout was 'one of the better ones' for a city special election.
