All-district softball teams announced

July 30, 2008

Three Fort Dodge Senior High softball players and the program's head coach were honored recently as all-district choices by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association.

A pair of St. Edmond athletes were also recognized, as well as a slew of area standouts.

Seniors Kenzie Scharf and Courtney Vaughn made the Class 4A West list, along with junior Tieryn Potratz. Andi Adams, meanwhile, received the third coach of the year award of her eight-year FDSH career - in a district that included the state champion (West Des Moines Valley) and runner-up (Sioux City North).

''It's incredibly humbling,'' Adams said. ''To receive this kind of recognition with Valley and Tom Bakey, North and Kevin Dicus, Waukee, Marshalltown and other solid teams in (the 4A West region) is flattering to say the least.

''I have to credit my kids. Individual awards like this are actually reflective of our program and the consistency it has been able to establish.''

The Dodgers were 28-14 overall this past season. Adams now sports a 363-136 career record with stops at St. Edmond, Eldora-New Providence and Fort Dodge. She is 310-107 at FDSH.

Scharf batted .307 with six home runs, seven doubles and 26 RBI. Vaughn hit .299 with 14 RBI, and was widely considered one of the best defensive shortstops in 4A.

Potratz, an all-state choice last summer, led the Dodgers in batting average (.420), hits (60), doubles (13) and triples (5). She also went 12-6 as a pitcher with a 2.42 earned run average.

Gael senior outfielder Katie Little and sophomore shortstop Kaitlyn Barrett made the 2A North Central all-district team. Both were also first team all-North Central Conference picks.

Little was also one of two area IGCA academic all-state honorees.

Algona teammates Mackenzie Siefken and Ashley Kajewski were 3A North all-district selections. Desiree Schnell (Pocahontas Area), Jenni Stumpf (Pocahontas Area), Maddie Woodruff (Emmetsburg), Kayla Stoltenberg (East Sac County), and Kristen Twait (Manson Northwest Webster) were on the 2A Northwest squad, while South Hamilton's Abigail Swalla made the 2A South Central chart.

Humboldt's Kyla Peters and Alex Clough joined Ashley Willard of Eagle Grove on the 2A North Central list.

Class 1A state champion Newell-Fonda had Susan Kies, Kelly Johnson and Lauren Devereaux on the all-Northwest squad. State qualifier Southeast Webster-Grand saw Jennifer Jorgensen, Shelby Messersmith and Kaci Stoneburner make the 1A North Central team, as well as Jordan Vaske (North Sentral Kossuth), Megan Rolling (North Sentral Kossuth), Michaela Grimm (West Bend-Mallard), and Kayla Hartman (West Bend-Mallard).

Stoneburner flanked Little as an academic all-stater.
