A Fort Dodge man driving his new motorcycle crashed on Fifth Avenue South Friday afternoon and was hospitalized.

Matthew Sheldon, 21, was taken to Trinity Regional Medical Center. A report on his condition wasn’t available Friday evening.

The crash happened at about 2 p.m. just east of Eighth Street when Sheldon’s eastbound motorcycle hit a curb and he lost control of it, according to police. Police officers reported that the motorcycle went up onto a median, slid across the median and entered a westbound lane. A westbound vehicle nearly hit Sheldon, officers said.

According to police officers, Sheldon was riding a newly acquired motorcycle. He apparently didn’t have much experience operating motorcycles, they added.

Traffic on busy Fifth Avenue South was limited to one lane in each direction as emergency workers treated Sheldon.

Fort Dodge police and firefighters, Trinity Regional Medical Center paramedics and Webster County sheriff’s deputies responded.
