BERNICE WARD

LAKE CITY — Bernice (Janssen) Ward, 89, died Friday, April 18, 2008 at Stewart Memorial Hospital in Lake City. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Lake City with Rev. Erland Asmus officiating. Burial in Merle Hay Cemetery in Glidden. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Lampe Funeral Home in Lake City.

Bernice Lillian Brower was born June 2, 1918 to parents Charles E. and Sophia Augusta (Floring) Brower, in Fullersburg, Illinois. She was baptized June 23, 1918 by Pastor H.E. Guebert in the Lutheran Church in Fullersburg, Illinois, and was confirmed April 9, 1933 by Rev. F.H. Rudi at Peace Lutheran Church in Glidden, Iowa. On June 15, 1935 she was united in marriage to Carl Janssen by Lutheran Minister F.H. Rudi of Glidden, Iowa. To this union two sons were born, Ronald Carl and Donald Dean. She attended Glidden School with the class of 1937. She graduated from post graduate school of Nursing in 1956. Bernice and Carl farmed south of Glidden before moving to Lanesboro where they continued to farm until retiring in 1974. Carl passed away in April 1985. On December 19, 1992 Bernice was united in marriage to Dwight Ward in Lake City, Iowa by Pastor Erland Asmus, and they made their home in Lake City. She and Dwight did a lot of traveling and attended many of Dwight’s Navy reunions. They enjoyed their winters in their home at Weslaco, Texas until recently.

Bernice was a member of the Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Lake City. Her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren were her pride and joy.

Bernice is survived by her husband, Dwight Ward of Lake City; son, Donald (Edna) Janssen of Carroll; step-daughter, Joy (Jim) Fowler of Ankeny; daughter-in-law, Marjorie Janssen of Glidden; her beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; brother, Charles (Laila) Knute of Boone; sister, Betty Wurr of Tipton; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother in infancy; former husband, Carl Janssen in 1985; son, Ronald; daughter-in-law, Sandra Janssen; grandson, Daniel Janssen; 2 great-grandchildren; brother, Norman Brower; sister-in-law, Leone Brower; and brother-in-law Vincent Wurr.
