FD Sylvan to begin college prep courses

By SARAH GENGLER, Messenger staff writer
POSTED: April 18, 2008
Students at Sylvan Learning Center are going beyond the basic tools of reading, writing and arithmetic with new college prep courses that will help expand students’ writing abilities.

Tiffany Proctor, center director and the director of education for Sylvan, 1520 1st Ave. S., says the program will allow students to prepare for higher education.

“My goal right now is to get kids interested in writing and get them to see how fun writing is,” she said. “It seems now, the most writing kids do is texting or instant messaging. That’s appropriate when they are talking to friends, but there needs to be a change in writing when it comes to homework and other forms of communication.”

The new courses for College Prep Writing are English 101 and Getting into College.

The two courses, which will start in September, can be taken together or separate, depending on a student’s needs. Both classes are appropriate for students in ninth through 12th grade as well as college freshmen.

English 101 will focus on the basics of writing such as grammar and punctuation and other items that typically show up in a freshman English course. Getting into College will focus on writing for college entrance exams and essays and other writings students might need to do to get into college.

Sylvan is also adding new components to its current writing course called Academic Writing. It is expanding the program — originally for grades four through 12 — to now include second and third graders. The center will be focusing more on handwriting style and the way students print when they write, as well as grammar and composition.

Visual organizers and graphics will be used to help students visualize the writing process and where their ideas are going on paper. All of the components that Sylvan will be adding will take place this summer, after July 1.

Sylvan Learning Center currently helps 30 students ranging from kindergarten to 11th grade in six different programs. Academic reading, math, academic writing, beginning reading, study skills and homework help are programs currently available to parents and students at the center.

Students can start signing up for the college prep writing courses now, and those who are in academic writing will start seeing the new components in their learning after July 1.

For more information on the new college prep writing courses, contact Tiffany Proctor at the Sylvan Learning Center at 576-2000 or tproctor@ia-ilsylvan.com.
