Eating healthy, staying active and following the pillars of Character Counts were reinforced with Feelhaver Elementary students Wednesday after a visit from high school Youth in Action students.

Sophomores Joel Stover, Kaylee Jeske, Katie Niesen and Emily Ruden from Fort Dodge Senior High and Josh Stumpf from St. Edmond High School led the students in numerous chants and exercises to show how easy it is to remember to eat right and exercise.

“All the students involved in Youth In Action are volunteers,” said Pam Bunte, Character Counts coordinator for the Healthy Living department at Trinity Regional Medical Center.

“There are a total of 21 students between St. Edmond and Fort Dodge Senior High that take time out of their own school day to teach kids about healthy living and Character Counts.”

The theme used in the Youth In Action visits is “Exercise Good Character” fitting in both key words that the group is focusing on with the students. YIA has done its assembly at Hillcrest, Duncombe and Feelhaver and will perform at all of Fort Dodge public elementary schools along with St. Edmond Elementary and St. Paul Elementary before the end of the school year.

Each high school student that joins YIA goes through training in Character Counts in Des Moines prior to going into other schools, and the group meets monthly to plan its activities at each place.

“School always comes first for the (YIA) students,” Bunte said. “These students are also part of Thrive.”

YIA is also involved in “Go the Distance Day” which happens every year in May as part of Lighten Up Iowa.
