Edwards offers recipe for disaster

POSTED: January 12, 2008

As evidence that the U.S. military “surge” in Iraq is working continues to mount, some ultra-liberals are working overtime to declare defeat in that conflict — notwithstanding the fact that some of their campaign pledges could put more American troops at risk.

John Edwards, one of the contenders for the Democratic Party’s nomination for president, has come up with a new, dangerous plan.

Edwards is eager to outdo rivals Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama in promises to pull U.S. troops out of Iraq. To that end, he pledged that, if he is elected president, he will make it a priority to withdraw U.S. troops who are training Iraqi soldiers and police officers. Edwards, in making the pledge, noted that the trainers themselves require protection by other U.S. troops.

That is true enough — but it ignores the reality that failure to provide training to the Iraqis would result in chaos in that country, once U.S. troops are withdrawn. And the sooner Iraqis can be prepared to handle security on their own, the sooner American troops will not be needed in that country. In addition, failure to train Iraqis would make the withdrawal process itself more dangerous.

Edwards’ plan, then, is a recipe for disaster — and a clear ploy to attract voters from the extremist wing of his party.

Thompson? You can't be serious. He appears to be asleep on most issues. But I do agree, we need a business background in charge. Not a career politician. Our political process and the money it takes to run for office have become a nightmare. We are in serious trouble.

Seems to me like all of the Democratic candidates have offered only promises that are more and more rediculous and outlandish. Some of the Republican candidates are nearly as bad, but by and large, the Republican candidates seem to make more sense to me, although I do wish there was one clear candidate who really shows outstanding promise - from either party! Why can't they run a candidate who comes from a business background instead of professional office-holders who are totally out of touch with the day-to-day working class like almost all of us are? Thompson seems to come closest to that kind of background. What do you others think?
