Behind another stellar defensive effort, the Gaels (4-0 overall, 4-0 in the North Central Conference) jumped out to a 15-4 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back.
‘‘I thought we played a really solid all-around game,’’ said St. Edmond head coach Adolph Kochendorfer. ‘‘We hit some big shots early on, which seemed to get our confidence going.’’
Senior Andy Nagel, a North Dakota State University recruit, led the Gaels with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Jay Bunte chipped in 11 points, four steals and four assists, and Bryan Huss tallied 11 points, including three triples.
Senior AJ Doughan paced the Golden Bears (4-2, 3-2) with 13 points. Colby Krieps contributed nine.
St. Edmond forced 22 Garrigan turnovers and dominated the glass, winning the battle on the boards, 36-19. The Gaels also made 15 of 21 free throws, while the Golden Bears were just 5-for-7 from the charity stripe.
‘‘We made some huge shots down the stretch and our defense really stepped up in the fourth quarter,’’ Kochendorfer said. ‘‘Garrigan is always a big rivalry game, so it was nice to come out on top — especially on the road.’’
The Gael junior varsity squad lost 39-21. Zach Baldwin led the Gaels with 10 points.
St. Edmond returns to the court at Hampton-Dumont on Friday. Tip is scheduled for 7:45 p.m.
