The Iowa Central women’s basketball team used hard-nosed defense to cruise past Southeast Community College of Nebraska, 72-52, and remain unbeaten on the season inside Hodges Fieldhouse Tuesday evening.

‘‘Undefeated sounds pretty good right now, but we have another big game (today) and we need to stay focused and be sure we play hard,’’ said Iowa Central head coach Craig Carlson.

The Tritons (6-0) led by 17 at intermission and held Southeast to just 17 first half points while forcing the Storm to commit 13 early turnovers.

In the second half, Iowa Central ballooned the margin to as many as 29 points, thanks in part to second-team preseason All-American Jess Hunecke, former Manson Northwest Webster standout Jacque Markert and freshman reserve Abby Brend, who combined for 27 of the Tritons 37 second-half points.

‘‘Hunecke got in early foul trouble in the first half, but she came back in the second and cleared the boards and worked hard,’’ Carlson said. ‘‘Markert had another nice day and Brend and the bench really stepped up tonight.’’

Brend ended with a game-high 17 points — including three triples, while Hunecke was right behind her with 16. Markert and freshman Kylie Dilla recorded 12 and 11 points, respectively. Dilla tallied seven assists as well.

The Tritons are back in action tonight hosting Minneapolis Community College, with tip off slated for 5:00 p.m. Iowa Central has already defeated MCC once this season, 73-39.
