DES MOINES — The Fort Dodge girls gave second-ranked Des Moines East all they could handle, but in the end the Scarlets would hold on in the end for a 65-52 victory on Tuesday night.

With a little over two minutes remaining in the contest, following a foul and a technical foul and the 14th-ranked Dodgers (0-1 overall) cut the lead to five after hitting 3 of 4 field goals.

The Dodgers had the ball following the charity work, but couldn’t cash in. Fort Dodge put on a pressure defense to try force the Scarlets into turnovers, but the press forced some easy looks and DM East got some easy baskets.

“In the second half, we cut it 10 with three minutes left and then cut it to five,’’ said FDSH head coach Kim Vaughn. ‘‘We were trying to pressure them, but they got some easy baskets.’’

It was a valiant comeback effort from the Dodgers, who fought to a 15-15 first quarter tie. The Scarlets (1-0) wouldn’t let Fort Dodge back into it in the first half, going on a 15-0 run.

‘‘It was tied at 15 after the first and then we got into foul trouble and they made that big run,’’ Vaughn said. ‘‘We let the pressure get to us and when they had that run we weren’t patient.’’

For the first time on the court this season, the Dodgers had some rust, but Vaughn was pleased with their overall performance.

‘‘I’m proud of them because they never gave up,’’ Vaughn said. ‘‘We had them on their hills, but weren’t patient. We can’t feel bad for losing to a team like that.’’

Junior Tristan O’Brien had a strong outing going 10-for-17 from the floor with 21 points.

“Tristan had an excellent night,’’ Vaughn said. ‘‘They couldn’t stop her.’’

Senior Baileigh O’Brien had a tough night from the floor, going 1-for-12, but she did finish with 10 points, knocking down eight free throws.

Ashley Vratny, who was in foul trouble all night long was near double digits, scoring nine points on 2 of 3 shooting and 4-for-5 from the charity stripe.

Next action for the Dodgers is Friday when they host Johnston.
