I hate to say it Cranky, but I kinda agree with you. Get rid of manditory sentences and leave it up to the judge to impose a sentence taking into account their past history.

Maybe if they'd stop jailing non-violent offenders for years and years they'd have space for the scum of the earth like this guy. Who do you want walking the streets - a pot smoker or a murderer? The big war on drugs has loaded our prisons so full of mostly harmless people who have mandatory sentences, and the real bad guys get squeezed out since their laws haven't kept pace during the "drug war". I can't imagine too many of you want new prisons being added to our tax burden, so it's time we as a nation get over our fascination with pot especially and focus on the real criminals.

It's no stretch. The legislators are in Des Moines. They have had years to fix this as it is not the first time that a person has been let out early and killed. The legislators have had time to fix this. They have chosen not to.

I don't disagree with your sentiment nor your outrage Ms. parks...but c'mon. To say that Kathlynn Sheppard is dead and the people serving in the state house are responsible is a stretch. This man used a system that was set up, probably by other lawmakers, and got our early. And by the way- this man was still responsible for his own actions. So, while agree the law needs to be changed, and as far as I'm concerned they should serve their full sentence- we also know that is not how it has been. Change will come and I am sure dems/repubs can come together on this. Just think you are stretching it to say it happened due to the legislators in DM.

Agreed, Jane! If it's lack of prison space, use the areas now used for libraries, exercise rooms, TV rooms, etc. for more cells. The prisoners don't need those "rights" -they gave them up when they committed crimes! If the politicians & judges now in office won't work towards a safer place for us, let's remember that at election time - someone out there has to have some backbone!
