When a city or county in rural north central Iowa needs a plan or grant to help their community, it often looks to Midas Council of Governments for some assistance....

ColB, how do you suppose production per acre of land in this area has increased fourfold + in just my lifetime? And given the increase in acres farmed per farmer, the small towns are themselves disappearing so Dodgers will soon have no opportunity to move there. Maybe we should just give it all back to the Indians. Better yet, get real!

Sounds like a great idea Anderson! At least then there will still be the ability to support life in 50 years.

Yeah, why not turn all rural Webster Country back into the wetland it once was! Or all north-central Iowa, for that matter, since it was mostly wetland and not settled until tackled by immigrants from places in Europe that knew how to deal with such saturated flat lands.

I have two main planning goals on my wish list for Midas to tackle. 1. Come up with growth boundaries to keep the towns/cities within a manageable area to allow the communities to run more efficiently avoiding future sprawl. This has to be done on a regional scale because if you only do it in one town, people will just move to nearby towns but, if done well, the effects could be higher property values and higher quality of services for everyone. 2. Be leaders in the state by finally taking on agricultural pollution. Bring back more wetlands to help the groundwater and reduce the runoff into rivers & streams. Iowa is an embarrassment in this area.
