Could you believe it, trooper, that when I was fifteen, I hitch hiked to Dodge, admitted myself to the Lutheran Hospital for a tonsillectomy, walked out the next morning and wrote a check for it? My biggest to date, $75 if I remember correctly, and my room had been the screened-off end of the hallway!. Don't recall signing any papers or permits, although the appt had been made by my hometown doctor, all w/o parental involvement. Now kids are on their folks' insurance until they are 26 and paperwork is mountainous. My last bill at TRMC was $57,000! Signs of the times.

When I had my tonsils out in 1955, it was a week stay in the hospital. Now they get you in and out in the same day. Also around that same time period...I fell on a broken beer bottle and put a 2 in gash in the meaty part of palm(thumb). I kid you not it was a full week in the hospital. Of course no insurance back then. It's almost laughable. I was in the hospital a couple of years ago and they had my records clear back to the cut hand and tonsillectomy.
