Does Shaw - or anyone else - realize that purchasing power of receipts from per unit taxes have declined continually and rather drastically with inflation? But why raise the tax a dime at one fell swoop? Adjustment to high gas taxes would be about the same for the average Joe if the tax were raised 2 or even 3 cents per gallon a year for 4 or 5 years than to adjust to the recent re-imposition of the 2% FICA contribution, and gradual increases in spending on roads from increases in gas tax receipts could not only be spent more wisely but spent with less inflationary effect in the road maintenance and construction industry.
