Better regulations may be needed

February 23, 2013

Music is only part of the show at many concerts these days. Unfortunately, death sometimes is on stage, too. Recently, people in West Warwick, R.I., observed a grim anniversary....

I agree. Even though I love things that go BOOM! indoor fireworks are a stupid idea due to the risks that anything can happen with them. Most successful bands, that have the money, use pyro simulators, flame generators that are LP fueled and adjustable for the size of the effect. Yes, still a risk, but not near as much setting off an outdoor firework indoors. Firing off "traditional" fireworks indoors is a dumb idea.

Ah, yes, bh, govt REGULATION - never perfect, is it? I, too, have been involved in outdoor firework displays, and one of my very first experiences in life was to see an outdoor one go awry and cause a spectacular fire. Still see no need for indoor pyro displays as an entertainment enhancement; better to outlaw them than govt regulation with yet more bureaucrats on the payroll.

Anderson, I have helped set up and shoot professional outdoor display fireworks. You need a fireworks explosive permit from the BATF to even be able to legally buy and posses that kind of fireworks and the e matches to eclectically fire them. I never worked with indoor product, but I assume it requires a licensed indoor technician along with state and city permits to purchase and use such products. Currently, the requirements and background checks to get a fireworks explosive license comes with a free rectal exam. The unlicensed person can not legally buy such items and a hazmat CDL license is required to transport them. Someone was cutting corners to save money. Illegal or unlicensed use/possession is federal prison time.

I know, hb but clearly the users in this case, as those before in Boston, didn't undrstand or check for the difference. I still see no need for indoor pyro or sense in their use. Let's just kill one of our lesser joys!

Anderson, indoor pyro are specially made for indoor use. The chemical mix and fire/heat produced is 100% different than for outdoor pyro. Indoor pyro is also very expensive. Current regulations and pre-show inspections should of caught the wrong product being used in a very unsafe manner.

I think our regulations are fine. Yes, we have had a tragic fire, but with all the regulations in place already, you would think a fire official would of had to inspect and sign off on pyro usage. I am pretty sure indoor pyro requires permits and insurance just like outdoor firework shows. Fire personnel should be present though, just like is required for outdoor shows. They are not trained in pyro use, but if they see something they think is unsafe, show is over. The band was not caught setting up outdoor product indoors. The fire dept should of caught that as indoor pyro is marked for such use. It is also more expensive and cutting corners should be watched out for.

One would think modern music is fireworks enough without need for old-fashion fireworks inside ANY enclosed space. Only idiots...
