2009 Serving Our Country

Dave and Sandi Lee, Dakota City

Dave and Sandi Lee
November 11, 2009

By SANDY MICKELSON Messenger staff writer DAKOTA CITY — Neither Dave nor Sandi Lee can say anything bad about the Navy — that’s where they met each other. Two of her cousins were stationed at Pensacola, Fla., with them, and the four ran around together in their off hours. “My cousins were always with us,” she said. “One night we went to the movie alone, then we walked on the beach and he asked me to marry him. The first thing we did was look for my cousins.” “We were walking through that white sand,” Dave Lee said. “And it just lit up. It just sparkled.” What else could he do? That’s what he wants to know. Sandi Hill, of Fort Dodge, wanted to join the Navy right out of high school in 1965, but couldn’t make all the requirements. She kept trying, however, and four years after she started her quest, was able to join. She took basic training at Bainbridge, Md., and served in Pensacola, Fla., and Albany, Ga. “My field was yeoman, like a secretary, at both places,” she said.
