2007 Year In Review (sports)

Dodgers break through at state

Messenger photo by Judd Parker- Fort Dodge players react after Wade Martin’s fielder’s choice plated the tying run and an error scored Tyler Leadley in the Dodgers state quarterfinal win over Ankeny.
January 3, 2008

State tournament magic blessed the Fort Dodge baseball program for the first time in 18 years this past summer.

A remarkable three-run comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning rallied the sixth-seeded Dodgers past CIML rival Ankeny, 5-4, in an instant classic that somehow, some way pushed head coach Matt Elsbecker’s squad in the Class 4A semifinals.

Principal Park looked like Ed McNeil Field South yesterday evening, and when pinch-runner Tanner Beck trotted home with the winning run on an error to seal a victory dipped in destiny, fans in attendance celebrated like the pride of Fort Dodge was all on the line.

The Dodger players and coaches did, too.
