You be the "judge"

April 8, 2011 - Roger Feldhans
Sorry for being away so long, had a rough week of not feeling the bestest. I am back now and working on what to do this weekend. "Iowa Thing" is still showing at the Permanent Collections Gallery Art, 921 Central Ave, Fort Dodge Iowa. We had a great reception and the art is absolutely amazing. If you have not seen it, get down to the gallery and check out this show. I find new things every time I look at this stuff. "Mingled Visions" is still at the Blanden Memorial Art Museum in Fort Dodge. A great photographic show that would be of interest to photographers and historians alike. Now for the new stuff, I am participating in the "Iowa Artist Area 5 Annual Art Show" being held at the Iowa Central Bioscience and Health Building. The show will be April 9th, and run from 9am to 3pm, the public is invited and addmission is free. The show will be judged and critiqued by Maureen Seamonds, art professor at Iowa Central Community College. At 11am, a talk will be given by Professor Tom Stancliffe the creator of "Axiom", Iowa Centrals new outdoor sculpture. I met Tom at the installation of "Axiom" and I am really looking forward to his talk. I will attach a picture of "Axiom" to give you an idea of what the sculpture looks like, but to really get a "feel" for it I suggest you stop out at ICCC and have a look. This is a "judged" show. Judging art is very tough, it is subjective. It does not have perameters that are easily measured. Art is rarely quantifiable, making judging extremely difficult. I like to let each person viewing the show be their own judge. I never envy the judges position, cause no matter what you choose someone is going to disagree with your choices. That being said, I do enjoy getting a judge's opinion on my work as well as the work of others. Gives you a chance to see it through their eyes, might change your perspective on a piece. I find the critiques usually help me in furthering my art and taking it to the next level. I am looking foward to this show, this will be the first one I actually attend. In the past I have had scheduling conflicts preventing me from attending. Last year I was opening my show at the "Ritual Cafe" in Des Moines. What a great space to show art. Ritual Cafe is a vegetarian cafe, but it is also soooo much more than that. They show works of art by different artists each month and have music from time to time. A great atmosphere for creativity, I had a wonderful time showing my art there and hope to again in the future. The Ritual Cafe has a great location too, it is on the same block as the Papa Johns Sculpture Park. So stopping there and taking a walk through the park is a great idea. Well, that is if for the visual arts this weekend, I am sure there are other things. Sorry if I missed them, post a comment if you know of other things would love to hear about them. I hope you get out to see some art, cause when you miss it, you are missing a lot....and that is the way I see it! Peace
