E15 ban needs to be lifted

To the editor:

The Trump Administration has recently directed the Environmental Protection Agency to allow sales of E15 year-round rather than the current Sept. 16 to May 31 timeframe. While a longer window to purchase E15 is important to me as a corn producer, it is also important to all Iowans for the economic value additional usage of the locally produced fuel brings to our state.

Like most Iowans, I am proud Sens. Grassley and Ernst were instrumental in urging President Trump toward this directive. Unfortunately, that process has been stalled by a number of factors, including some hesitancy by the Environmental Protection Agency which needs to modify the glitch that makes it illegal to sell E15 in the summer months. Time is now an urgent factor and the EPA must act soon in order to get the restriction lifted for this upcoming summer driving season.

I have contacted Sens. Grassley and Senator Ernst thanking them for their support of homegrown biofuels and also letting them know their courage in both standing up to the oil lobby and keeping EPA on-task is very much appreciated.

“The larger the choir the louder the song,” so if any readers of this letter wish to do something similar, I’m sure the senators will appreciate knowing their constituents want them to stay strong in this effort.
