Garden Club seminar succeeds

To the editor:

The Fort Dodge Area Garden Club presented its annual garden seminar on April 7. Our two speakers presented so much interesting information.

Our first speaker was Jamie Beyer, from Midwest Waterscapes. His fascinating presentation featured information on all types of water features from large, multilevel ponds with waterfalls, to using tiny tabletop dishes. He talked about the choice and care of water plants, deterring mosquitos by using mosquito “dunks” (bt bacteria), and encouraging the presence of dragonflies and toads.

Our second speaker was Jesse Randall, from the ISU extension office. He taught us about tree planting; selecting specimens, planting, initial care, and pruning. He is an absolute treasure trove of information. If you have a question about your trees, he is the person to ask.

We wish to thank the Webster County Extension office, Iowa Master Gardeners, and Iowa Central Community College for sponsoring our seminar.

Our special thanks go to those individuals and area businesses who generously donated door prizes. These include: C &S Products, Citizens Community Credit Union, Becker Florists, the Blanden Art Museum, Walgreens, Graham Tire, Zakeers, FD Ford/Toyota, Mary Kay’s Gifts, Marco’s Pizza, Ja-Mar Drive Inn, Boomgaars, Earl May, Kemna Auto, Buffalo Wild Wings, Pizza Ranch, JRG Livestock and Pet Supplies, Party Productions, Peking Garden, Glass Flower Garden Art, as well as members of the FD Area Garden Club, and the Federated Garden Club.

We had such an interesting and informative morning. We hope to see you there next year.
