Backs Iowa Central

To the editor:

If not us — who? If not now — when? On behalf of the Fort Dodge Community Foundation and United Way, I am expressing support for the Iowa Central bond referendum. Iowa Central Community College is a very important and positive educational asset for our community and region that needs our support. In terms of workforce development, ICCC plays a critical role in providing important education and training programs that provide career opportunities for our area youth. Whether it is the health care field, industrial manufacturing or human services, these jobs are of crucial importance in helping meet the workforce needs of our local and area employers.

For students interested in attaining a four-year bachelor’s degree, Iowa Central offers the first two years of higher education at a much lower cost. Many students graduate with their Associate of Arts degree and then move on to a four year institution with little or no student debt. In addition, the duel enrollment programs at ICCC, in partnership with area high schools, help area students save as much as $6,000 in college tuition before graduating from high school. This is a huge benefit for many students and their families.

These educational opportunities are extremely valuable for the students as well as the employers in our community. A small tax payer investment in the infrastructure needs of ICCC today will pay significant benefits for so many in the future. I encourage the voters of Fort Dodge, Webster County and the region to support the Iowa Central referendum on Feb. 6.
