AFES fundraiser is today

To the editor:

(Today) the Fort Dodge Women’s Study Club is hosting a Mardi Gras themed social at the AFES gymnasium. This event will serve as a fundraiser to the programs the AFES organization runs. The event runs from 7 to 10 p.m. and tickets may be purchased at the door.

I would like to encourage people to attend this event. My son participates in the AFES football and basketball leagues. I am very impressed with the sports instruction he gets but value the “additional” benefits he is getting even more. The AFES organization has impressed me with the manner in which they hold the young people participating accountable for their actions. This includes turning in report cards, behavior at school and socially, listening during practice and competition, and paying close attention to details. The behaviors that are being molded during these programs are so much more than the sports that are used as the vehicle to reach these kids. Our local community needs to appreciate and embrace the efforts of what the AFES program is working daily to achieve.

Raising children is the toughest job in the world, and the AFES organization is working on having a positive effect on each and every child that is part of their organization.
