Supports bond proposal

To the editor:

Fifty-one years ago, Albert Habhab, mayor of Fort Dodge, and I, student body president, participated in the groundbreaking ceremony for a new Iowa Central Community College campus.

I wore a younger man’s suit then and obviously I am not in as good of shape as I was then. Neither are the original Iowa Central buildings now approaching their 50th birthday. Updating and improving these buildings is one reason I support the Iowa Central $25.5 million general obligation bond referendum on Feb. 6.

Another reason is the need to relocate and enlarge the Fuel Testing lab, which under the direction of Dr. Don Heck, provides workers for Iowa’s growing alternative fuels industry and has become the only education-connected fuel quality assurance entity, a sort of Underwriters Lab or Good Housekeeping seal of approval for biodiesel fuels.

Iowa Central is an essential partner in providing skilled workers for area businesses, health providers and manufacturers. This role must be continued and expanded to attract and keep businesses and people in our area.

These and other reasons — STEMM education, high school partnerships, Student Success Center, student and staff security and improvements at the Storm Lake and Webster City campuses — are why I am voting “yes” on the Iowa Central bond issue on Feb. 6. I urge you to vote “yes” too. Thank you.
