Police officers deserve our thanks

To the editor:

On Dec. 17 at about 12:30, I was summoned to the home of an elderly acquaintance, who had just been burglarized. Thankfully, she was unhurt, and the items lost were negligible.

I wanted to thank the officers of the Fort Dodge Police Department who were called to the scene. They arrived promptly, and carefully and professionally surveyed the crime scene and obtained the evidence available. (The burglar had cut himself breaking the glass in the door, and left blood behind.) More importantly, they calmed the victim down quickly, and after asking some questions, determined that her purse had been stolen. These officers then took it upon themselves to help the victim by calling the bank, so that the victim’s checking account and credit card (which were in her purse) could be closed immediately. This saved what could have been a costly nightmare. These officers were professional but helpful, kind and considerate.

A big thank you to Lt. Matt Wilson and Officers Matt Burns and Chris Wieland. Please know that you helped make a bad situation much better, and allowed us to feel more safe and secure. So many stories in today’s media are critical of law enforcement – these men and women live each and every day to keep us safe, and in some cases even put their own lives on the line for others. They deal with criminal behavior and see many people at their absolute worst. And yet these officers were cheerful and assisting, truly assets to the Department and to our Fort Dodge community.

Next time you see a Fort Dodge police officer, shake their hand or tip your cap to them, and thank them for all they do.
