Garden seminar succeeds

To the editor:

It’s spring. Yes, it’s spring again, and the Fort Dodge Area Gardeners presented our annual garden seminar on March 4. Our two speakers had great topics for beginner and experienced gardeners.

Steve Wright, Extension Council member and Master Gardener talked about “Vegetable Gardening for Everyone,” Wonderful, fresh, pesticide-free vegetables can be grown almost anywhere, and he showed us how. Leslie Hunter, horticulturist at the Des Moines Botanical Center spoke about “The Layered Garden.” She showed how a lush, full effect can be created in a large or small space by using plants of different heights. She also invited everyone to visit the expanded Des Moines Botanical Garden where she utilizes the layered technique.

We thank the Webster County Extension office, Iowa Master Gardeners and Iowa Central Community College for sponsoring our seminar. Our special thanks go to those individuals and area businesses who generously donated door prizes. These include: Decker Sporting Goods, Flooring America, Iowa State Extension office, Stone Creek Landscape and Nursery, Lilly Grace on Central, The Cheesecake Lady, Napoli’s Italian Restaurant, Perkins Restaurant, Pelham Waters, Taco Tico, Fazoli’s, Pizza Hut, Taco Johns, The Messenger, Walgreens, JRG Supply, C&S Products, Citizens Community Credit Union, Fort Dodge Federated Garden Club, Mary Kay Matishek, Becker Garden Center, Lubon Hiszczynskyj, Howard Larson, and David Moody.

We had a wonderful morning and hope to see you there next year.
