Will vote ‘yes’ on referendum

To the editor:

Iowa Central Community College has been a great partner and resource for the South Central Calhoun and Laurens-Marathon school districts. Our students have the opportunity to earn college credits through Iowa Central during their high school years which gives them a big jump start on their college career. These credits come at no cost to students or their families, which is a great value and opportunity. Every year a large percentage of our seniors go on to attend Iowa Central. Some students go for transfer degrees and save thousands of dollars against the high cost of four year schools. When a student graduates from any of the health science or industrial technology programs, many of them come back to our communities to live and work.

As a shared superintendent in the South Central Calhoun and Laurens-Marathon school districts, I have seen firsthand the advantage our students receive from earning college credits while they are still in high school. The partnership we enjoy with Iowa Central has been beneficial as an educational tool and a huge cost-saving tool for local families.

If Iowa Central can expand its relationships with our schools and others in the region for approximately $1.04 per month from the average homeowner, it is possible regional academies could be developed in the South Central Calhoun and Laurens-Marathon school districts. Proposed regions for expansion include Lohrville and Laurens if the referendum is approved. While these areas have not been finalized, it would be great to provide opportunities close to home for our students and other students in the area.

I can’t imagine too many families whose children or grandchildren haven’t saved money because of the chance to take early college credit through Iowa Central. That’s why I’ll vote “yes” on Dec. 6.
