Fishing tournament succeeds

To the editor:

On June 7, It Gets Better FD & Beyond hosted its third annual fishing tournament at Kennedy Park. We had a great turnout with 80 registered participants. What a joy it was to witness many kids catching their first fish and seeing the excitement overcome their faces and their families. The fishing wasn’t bad with more than 100 fish caught, weighed in and released. Special thanks to the fishing guides, both youths and adults who assisted many.

This event would not have been as successful without the great contributing sponsors that totaled well over $1,000 in donations and prizes.

Big thanks go out to Pepsi, Iowa Outdoors Store for donating bait, Pat Buckley who donated hundreds of dollars worth of prizes, Fort 8 Movie Theater, George’s Diner, Family Bowling, Fort Frenzy, Mary Gormally from H&M Hair care and artist Kelly Hynes for donating a special piece of his artwork.

We also awarded trophies in three classes, the smallest fish award and the biggest fish award, which is to honor the local fishing great Jim Buckley.

Every year we donate 50 percent of our net profit to a chosen charity. The past has been Linking Families and Communities, and last year was Community and Family Resources. This year, we gave the youth ambassadors the opportunity to decide what was important to them. They chose our One Last Mission campaign chaired by Mike and Ann Adams. This campaign is an effort to send our Vietnam veterans to Washington, D.C., for an honor flight.

Thanks to Webster County Conservation for working with us on this free fishing weekend. Thank you for all who came out to enjoy the beautiful day and to support some great local causes.

We have many new unique plans for next year to make it grow bigger and better.
