Highway 20 is ready at last

Celebration of this four-lane throughway is today

For more than a half century residents of this part of Iowa have worked hard to promote the conversion of U.S. Highway 20 into a four-lane thoroughfare that spans the Hawkeye State from Dubuque to Sioux City. That goal has been achieved at last.

Today the finished project will be celebrated with a ceremony and ribbon cutting as the final four-lane section is opened officially. Gov. Kim Reynolds will be on hand to oversee this major step forward for our state.

The economic importance of four-laning this highway to the prosperity of northern Iowa in the years ahead has been the focus of its supporters for many years. The significance of the project’s completion would be hard to overstate. This highway provides a convenient connection that traverses the nation. Highway 20 spans the nation. It begins in Boston, Massachusetts, on the Atlantic Coast and ends in Newport, Oregon, on the Pacific Coast.

The Messenger applauds all those who have worked so hard for so many years to make this dream become a reality. The list of those who have helped make this day possible is very long indeed. Of particular note, however, are the dedicated leaders of the U.S. Highway 20 Corridor Association. They have championed this cause vigorously. Shirley Phillips is the group’s current president. Webster County’s own Bob Singer is first vice president.

All Iowans should cheer this major boost to our state’s economy.

The Messenger published a special commemorative booklet titled “60 years in the Making — US. Highway 20 Mississippi to the Missouri” that will be distributed at the ribbon cutting festivities.
