US pork will now be sold in Argentina

Important new trade deal will greatly benefit the Hawkeye State

Selling American agricultural products internationally makes an important contribution to our nation’s economy. It’s also hugely significant for the Hawkeye State.

According to information provided by the United States Department of Agriculture, agricultural exports support more than 1 million American jobs. There is good news in that regard regarding the sale of U.S. pork in Argentina.

As a direct result of negotiations between top Trump administration officials and their counterparts in Argentina, an agreement has been reached that will re-open the market in Argentina to US pork for the first time since 1992. Both President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence personally have sought this development in meetings with Argentine leaders including Argentine President Mauricio Macri during recent months. U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross, and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer all have played major roles in making this key trade agreement possible.

“After 25 years of discussions, America’s pork producers will soon be able to export their fine product to Argentina,” Pence said in a statement issued by The White House on Aug. 17. “This is one more example of the commitment of President Trump and his entire administration to breaking down international trade barriers and making free and fair trade a win-win for American workers, farmers, and our trading partners.”

Gov. Kim Reynolds enthusiastically welcomed this development in a statement issued Aug. 21.

“Iowa is the No. 1 pork producing state and home to nearly a third of our nation’s hogs,” she said. “This additional market for U.S. pork is incredible news for our state.”

According to Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey exports are vital to the pork industry, representing 26 percent of its production. As the nation’s top pork-producing state, the ramifications of this re-opened market for Iowa are nothing less than huge.

The Messenger applauds this major trade agreement. President Trump and his team worked hard to overcome concerns in Argentina that have kept that market closed to US pork for far too long. They deserve the thanks of all Iowans for bringing about a change that will have a significantly positive impact on our agricultural economy.
