Federal debt is a massive problem

Bringing government spending under control must be a priority

Recently, President Donald Trump lifted the government hiring freeze he ordered when he took office. A more targeted “drain the swamp” plan will be implemented, the White House claimed.

Doing so is badly needed because the growth of the federal problem is a long-term problem that needs to be addressed.

Big government has continued to get bigger for some time, despite several presidents’ pledges to hold the line on spending.

When Trump took office, the civilian federal government payroll, at about 1.4 million, was at its highest ever. The number of non-military employees grew 10 percent under former President Barack Obama and 17 percent under his predecessor, George W. Bush.

Let us hope Trump is more successful in cracking down on the bureaucracy. If he isn’t, it will be nearly impossible to bring federal spending down and make progress in reducing the mushrooming national debt. That indebtedness must be brought under control.
