Obamacare is losing many enrollees

President Barack Obama is a master at diverting attention from his administration’s failures, and the White House was at it again recently.

A goal of having 9.1 million customers signed up for health insurance through Obamacare exchanges was set by the administration last year. But by year’s end, there were just 8.8 million enrolled.

Well, the target was missed by only 3 percent, administration officials pointed out. Not bad, they said.

But that misses the point. It is that at the beginning of 2015, 11.7 million people had signed up for coverage under the exchanges. By the end of the year, the total had dropped to 8.8 million.

In other words, nearly one in four Americans who thought they were getting a good deal through Obamacare learned differently last year – and got out.

In fact, the administration already has declared defeat for this year. About 12.7 million people have signed up through the exchanges this year. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell has said her goal is to keep 10 million enrolled through the rest of the year.

That certainly is not the shining success story the White House has claimed for the program. It is one more reason Congress should be looking at scrapping Obamacare.
