Much remains to be done

As Philadelphia Dr. Kermit Gosnell prepares to spend the rest of his life in prison for murdering babies born alive during botched abortions, his lawyer has brought up a troubling aspect of the case.

Attorney Jack McMahon has told some reporters he blamed inadequate government regulation of abortion clinics for at least some of the deaths at the hands of Gosnell and his assistants.

Though McMahon clearly is still trying to defend his client, he is right about that. Grand jurors who indicted Gosnell were angered by the failure of both local and state health agencies to have stopped the doctor.

But McMahon added other clinics are engaged in the same type of practice that sent Gosnell to prison.

McMahon should be hauled before another grand jury and ordered to provide names – then more murder indictments should be issued.

And, as the first grand jury suggested, criminal charges also should be filed against local and state regulators who, to judge by what McMahon said, may still be murdering babies.
