Tree program deserves praise

Area residents had an opportunity Thursday to acquire trees at a bargain price.

The MidAmerican Energy/Friends of Wesbster County Conservation Plant Some Shade program distributed about 120 trees.

Most of the cost is borne by MidAmerican Energy. The price charged to people who obtained trees through this initiative was $30 per tree. That is about one-third of what one would pay at a retail outlet. To be eligible to receive a tree at this discounted price, a purchaser had to be a MidAmerican customer and agree to plant the tree on their own property. MidAmerican partners with Webster County Conservation to make the trees available.

Five tree varieties were available: swamp white oak, sugar maple, Glenleven linden, white pine and pagoda dogwood.

Planting trees beautifies a property and is good for the environment.

The Messenger applauds this worthwhile progam.
