Show marks club’s 50th anniversary

The River Valley Rockhounds Gem, Mineral and Fossil Show will take place Saturday and Sunday in the Career Education Building on Iowa Central Community College’s Fort Dodge campus. This annual event has developed a large following among people who have an interest in fossils, minerals and other interesting rocks.

This year’s show, however, is particularly noteworthy because it celebrates an important milestone in the history of the River Valley Rockhounds – the club has now been in existence for a half century.

Robert Wolf, club president, said members have worked hard to make this year’s show truly special.

“It will be bigger, with more programs,” he told The Messenger.

The decision to hold the show at Iowa Central is one of the enhancements because this location will afford dealers and exhibitors ample space to accommodate their displays.

According to Jim Baumer, show chairman, there will be presentations on flint-knapping, jewelry-making, rock-tumbling and much, much more. The mix has been carefully crafted to appeal to both novices and dedicated hobbyists.

As has been true in previous shows, careful attention has been paid to making this event especially appealing to children. Kids who attend will get free rock specimens.

The show will also feature an array of door prizes.

Doors open Saturday at 9 a.m. and the fun continues until 5 p.m. The hours on Sunday are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Messenger congratulates the River Valley Rockhounds on this important anniversary. Anyone with even a casual interest in rocks and geological history should take the time this weekend to pay a visit to the club’s outstanding show.

You won’t be disappointed.
